The Cardinals in Gothenburg, Nov. 18th.

I don't even have words to describe how awesome the show was. I've only seen Ryan once before, and it was last year. He was in a bad mood but the music was still great. But that is nothing compared to what tonight was.

Anyways, the show was seated, and everyone remained that way the entire show which was great. The show was supposed to start at 7 pm but it ended up starting close to 8 pm. They came out, jammed for a bit and then started into Peaceful valley. I died, they were smiling and you could tell from the start that this was gonna be a great show. Then they did a heartbreaking Blue Hotel, followed by When the stars go blue. It gave me chills. Then they did Rescue blues, jammed for a bit and went straight into Mockingbird.

After that some guy yelled out "tell us a story Ryan".. Ryan walked around stage pretending he didn't hear it. The guy yells it out again, and Ryan walks up to the mic and says "what?" like "did you say something?". He then goes on about how they're the cardinals, and that they're far from home and can barely speak english anymore. And that they speak the kind of english that they spoke ages ago, like when people went hunting and gathering. and then he made sounds like he was a caveman or something, it was funny either way.. Then he talked about Sweden I think, and the only part of that I got was "Santa's forgotten land." whatever that means, haha. And the audience is really quiet the entire time, and Neal goes "Ryan, they're actually listening!"..

After that they played an amazing Cold Roses, amazing! When they finish the song Ryan decided to take of this hat he's wearing, and someone whistled, and he immediately put the hat back on. Then he talked about how he was "trying to keep my brains in my skull" and that he wore the hat because he had an epiphany. He had realized that his haircut was just like Murdock from the A-team. He went on about how Murdock is really smart, and shouldn't be on the A-team, because he's so much better than the rest. Or something, it was hilarious. And then he played Halloweenhead.

Ryan talks about how they're the Cardinals now, and therefore Neal should be able to do his songs. So Neal did Freeway to the Canyon. Then they jammed, and then they went back into Freeway and then straight into Goodnight Rose. At this point I was amazed at how Ryan could sing like an angel, play guitar and still have time to wave instructions to the sound-guy (at least I think that's what he was doing). Major multi-tasking going on there. At the end of the song they go on and on and on, and everyone in the band is waiting for Ryan to stop and they're all practically laughing and then they go on to play Please do not let me go.

And then they take a 3 minute break. They come back out, Neal asks the crowd if we had a nice break. We say we did. Ryan says that he had some juice, Neal interupts and says "and set of the alarm in the bathroom". Ryan goes on about how the 2nd set is like a 2nd date. Cause this is where we're gonna see what it's all about, and who they really are. And also that there's gonna be some heavy petting. Haha, he was in a really good mood and it was great to see. Then they played Why do they leave. They really got into it, Ryan at one point looked like he was about to head bang, but then he realized what he was about to do and kinda contained himself. It looked really funny.

At this point they had turned down the lights and it was pretty dark on stage. Ryan walks away from the mic several times to try and read his set list, and eventually they played Everybody knows. And then they played I taught myself.. It was soo pretty, there are no words, but I loved it. Then Ryan dedicated a song to "my man" and I think he said Foreigner. I don't know, the band laughed anyways. Then they played The sun also sets.

At this point Ryan pulled up his pants (atleast I think that's what he did) and someone goes "wooho" and Ryan stands up straight, Neal goes "keep doing that, they like that". This was followed by You don't see me crying. After the song Ryan talks about how he hates Neal for making such a great album, "what did you like focus or something". Neal got a lot of applause, and Ryan jokes around "oh, your solo was great" and how everyone always compliments Neal. Neal soaks it all up, Ryan fake cries and has a meltdown as Neal put it.

Then it's time for the evening joke with Jon Graboff. Ryan sits down in the corner, and yells out 'Come pick me up!', while Neal shouts out something else. Jon tells Ryan to save it for his inflatable date, haha. Ryan fake-pouts and says that he's gonna get even by playing world of warcraft all night, into morning. Jon: well, you do that now anyways.

The joke was as follows: What is blue and smells like red paint? Blue paint. haha.

Ryan said it was Spacewolf's b-day and went on to sing his b-day song. Ryan jokes around about how this show is actually pre-taped and they're back home and we're actually watching a quicktime screening. Ryan talks like a robot to illustrate his point, and stutters to make it seem more real. It was real funny.

Ryan: "*sigh* omg! can't i just be in another band?!" haha. he talks about how something is easy meat for the critics, and they go through your stuff when you're not there. and they're in your backyard and report back to 'the others'. haha, i don't know, it was funny anyhow. then they played Off Broadway. Followed by a Kiss before I go.

At this point Ryan talks to Brad, and he says something like "if they don't like it then fuck it" and he sounds serious too. and then he and neal jokes around about how the crowd isn't liking the show and neal asks us if we do and we obviously say yes. and ryan goes "no you don't, I know how you feel!" he continues by saying "we should have just started that journey cover-band" and goes on imppersonating journey. then he dedicates Rip off to someone named Tracy Imman? I don't know, I can't read what I wrote. anyway, he says "she's so hot, her teeths all messed up. but if she was here she'd probably punch me in the eye for saying that"

Then he talks about how after the Manchester gig people were complaining about how Easy Plateau was too long, and that they jammed for too long. and he thinks those people should start a band, or get a hobby or go to the game store or something. and he wonders how come nobody has ever named an album greates shits. because it's the shit and it contains the greatest shits, haha, get it? funny. and then he goes back to the point he made about us not enjoying it, and says that he should have worn the other shirt. and Neal apologizes for their bad taste in clothes. haha

at like 10:20 they say goodbye. ryan comes out to do an encore at like 10:25. he's looking through a book of song "that's the wrong book, i need the other book. the big one" someone shouts out a request, to which ryan replies "no, that's not how it works. i want to do something which i know i can do my best on." then he looks through the book and goes "but i probably can't do my best on any of these." haha. he ends up doing a beautiful Sylvia Plath and then leaves the stage.

The crowd gets them to come out once more, and Ryan talks about on the 20 hour bus ride to sweden he started a new heavy metal band. it's apparently awesome, and he can't wait to put some of the stuff up on the internet. the band's called "Sleazy handshake", haha, he was so proud of that name. it was hilarious. he called it the dumbest thing he's ever done. He then goes serious for a minute and says: "i just have to say, that you guys here in sweden are spoiled rotten. look around! omg! o m g! i'm texting it right now!" and then he went on about how swedish girls look good. and since i'm a girl i just soaked up all of that, haha. he then explained how they had 4 minutes until they were being charged for playing so they did one last song which was an amazing goodnight hollywodd blvd. and that concludes the night.

now this is getting real long, but the show was amazing. i loved every minute of it, i couldn't stop smiling. they sounded great, and ryan's vocals were amazing. i couldn't ask for anything else. but now it's really late and i'm tired. i take no responsibility for spelling errors. :) i'll upload photos tomorrow and videos too if i can. g'night!

Re: The Cardinals in Gothenburg, Nov. 18th.

Thx for the blow-by-blow...sounds like it was fun and funny...If you are like me--you'll be in a Ryan-induced high state for at least a month. I have listened very little to anything but RA & the cards since Oct 31/ny!

i really enjoyed writing it cause it gave me perspective on the whole thing so i'll probably do it again tomorrow. you guys will have to wait for the review until wednesday though. :)

i guess i am in a ryan-induced high right now, cause not only have i been listening to them all day, but just now i actually bought a pair of ear-rings simply because they resemble the rose from Cold Roses. :)

i'm gonna upload some pics now, they're not amazing but whatever. and i'll try to get some clips up on youtube, the video quality sucks but the sound is alright.
